err, actually… i think that that’s a design patent, and not a patent in the usual sense of the word. design patent are actually not really that useful, because they can be easily circumvented (we discussed this once for a back then unusual but very useful adapter that we had come up with, our patent lawyer quickly trashed that idea as not being too worthwhile).
I would argue that these kinds of things are exactly what patents were intended to protect, not vague ideas that any piece of non trivial software violates. 🙂
