Under appreciated amateur solar astronomy has really improved in the past few years with the addition of affordable H-alpha filters from companies like Coronado.
Coronado filters, as well as those of their competitors, have got to be experienced. If you haven’t done so in the past, check-out NEAF 2009. It’s the Northeast Astronomical
Forum held every spring in Suffern, NY. Great guest speakers. Lots of scopes and other astronomical accouterments. Weather permitting, they also have a solar party in the
courtyard with large solar scopes outfitted with H-alpha filters. Again, if you haven’t seen the Sun through H-alpha filters you’ve got to.
